Recent Reads {9th Edition}

Well, I know I said my last "Recent Reads" would be my last of 2017, but Christmas break has been good for reading!  I wanted to round out the year with the last few books I read, so here they are.  Here's to more happy reading in 2018!

This was the third book in the Winter Street series that follows the Quinn family.  I read this book in about two hours, so it was great!  I got really attached to this family and was dying to see how their lives would turn out in this book.  Once again, it takes place around Christmas, and it about all the drama perils the family faces.  I don't want to say too much about it because it would give too much away, but you should read this series!

This is the fourth and final book in the Winter Street series that I've flown through.  I did something I never do with this book... I bought it.  I usually just check books out from my online library (that's what I did for the first three of this series), but this book just came out, so the wait was longer.  I was dying to see how the lives of the Quinn family wrapped up, so I couldn't wait!  This book also ties into her book The Rumor, so it had crossover characters that I knew from that one.  Anyways, this book wraps up the lives of the crazy Quinn family, and while it doesn't wrap everything up neatly, I was happy with how everyone parted ways at the end.  I've said it before, but Elin Hilderbrand books can be really hit or miss for me, but I loved every book in this series.  It was a perfect winter "beach read" for those not wanting a summer book right now, and it was a really easy series.  I'd highly suggest getting to know the Quinn family!

I had high expectations for this book because it had been on the library wait list for so long, and because of the description.  It said that if you loved phycological thrillers like The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl that this would be right up your ally.  Well, I hate to say this, but I didn't like this book at all.  Several times I wanted to put it down, but I kept on trucking.  There was no great mystery pulling at me or any big twists and turns, even at the end, and I couldn't stand the narrator.  She was a crude, self-centered character whom I didn't like at all.  I didn't like the way she treated her fiancĂ© or her family, and she just wasn't a likable character to me.  In short, it's about a girl who had something tragic happen during her teenage years and how she fights to overcome the stigma that came with it.  It definitely wasn't a phycological thriller, and there were no redeeming qualities to it.  I hate to give such a harsh review, but I wouldn't recommend this to any of my reading friends.

Saying Goodbye to 2017 {Our Year in Review}

2016 was a hard and crazy year for our little family, but 2017 brought some peace and calm.  I feel like we came into our own and really settled into being a family of five.  We let go of a lot of the busyness and chaos of 2016 and focused a lot more on our immediate family instead of feeling the need to say "yes" to everything and everyone, and kind of just got back to the basics of life and making sure we put important things first.  I feel like we lost some close friendships along the way by doing that, but we're in a very happy place right now for our family.  The friendships that really matter to us are there and are stronger than ever, so it's been a really refreshing year.  Like I said at the end of 2016, it's been a great year because all five us and our immediate families are healthy, we have great jobs to support our family, and we haven't lost anyone or had anything catastrophic happen.  God really blessed us in 2017, and I can't wait to see what's in store for 2018!  Here's a little look back at some of the highlights of our year.
